Cutting the Grid
The orthogonal grid has been a long-standing subject of my work. Irregular and spontaneously drawn grids have opened up new artistic possibilities, introducing an element of chance — a departure from the strict geometric and mathematical context of earlier grid work.
These irregular grids carry a dual potential. On one hand, they serve as a source for compositions in the Grid Modulations series. On the other, adjacent cells of the grid define the shape and size of individual elements — the Cut-Outs — which, when assembled, create the final artwork.
Colour plays a precise role in these assemblages. An appropriate choice of colour can produce three-dimensional effects, but in more recent works I have deliberately avoided this by using colours of close values, keeping the surface flat and unified.
