Unlocking Lines
A line segment — what I call a Broken Line — is the basic unit of this work. Drawn from edge to edge of the canvas, a single segment is a pure minimalistic statement. Combined, segments can create rhythms, cadences, planes and perspectives — and all these elements can be used simultaneously, multiplying the possibilities for artistic expression.
For dynamic compositions, I work with the Fibonacci sequence and its permutations to establish rhythmic patterns. For a more quiet expression, evenly spaced cadences take over — the same elements, a different tension.
In a series dedicated to the square, I pursued a minimalistic approach close to drawing. The square is stripped down to its outline, then deconstructed, shifted and reassembled until a new compositional tension emerges. Additional works on the Square can be seen in MIXED MEDIA section.
A particularly captivating effect emerges when a line segment is intentionally interrupted and then continued, leaving a visible gap. At that break point, the background colour appears optically brighter, and a virtual texture is created. These subtle but intriguing effects enrich the surface of the painting and reward the attentive viewer.
